ICVFX — Behind-The-Scenes
[VIRTUAL CINEMATOGRAPHY, COLOR CALIBRATION, LIVEFX OPERATIONS]
At the Volume Control (next 3 photos): Jacques operates both UE editor and a remote UE ipad. Also manages the Novastar video processor. Jacques is a full operator of the Assimilate LiveFX media server (aka the VP “swiss army knife” ).
Full set of tools for Brooklyn Bridge Cafe (see VP TECH – Proof of concept section). From L to R; LiveFX compositor, Novastar control, remote iPad, UE5 editor, calibrated monitor, other UE 5editor.
nDisplay multi-user session with 2 UE operators.
[UE OPERATIONS: CG WORLD ALIGNMENT & GRADING]
ON-SET — Behind-The-Scenes
On-set with the DP and Director (next 4 photos):
♦ Live on-set control of virtual camera (position, DOF, aperture, iris), spatial CG world alignment via remote iPad
♦ Live wall content grading
Reviewing at trusted monitor with video tech specialist.
Remote UE5 iPad capabilities:
♦ Precise spatial control of the ICVFX camera and the CG stage /world
♦ Frustums full color grading
♦ Wall frame rate tuning via overscan percentage slider (see RCP section below).
Busy operating virtual camera on remote UE iPad and grading wall content at calibrated monitor.
VP TECHNOLOGY – INNOVATIONS ⇧
1. SET A NEW BENCHMARK — NVIDIA DLSS INTEGRATION in NDISPLAY
Integrated NVIDA DLSS 3.5 and 3.7 into UE 5.4 nDisplay system
♦ Achieved 50-200% performance boost with high-fidelity, artifact-free imagery
♦ Frame Generation enabled for extra speedup
♦ This remains one of the only successful DLSS 3.7 integrations in nDisplay. In June 2025, UE 5.6 announced a partial integration of DLSS
A major technical milestone that even large VP teams have yet to fully implement.
Real-time system stats (latency & frame rate) displayed on top screen and RCP iPad
2. ON-SET UE5 CONTROL via RCP IPAD
Implemented Unreal’s Remote Control Presets (RCP) on iPad for on-set live control of:
♦ UE Stage & nDisplay wall positioning
♦ ICVFX camera positioning
♦ ICVFX camera and lens control (focus, aperture, iris shape)
♦ Frustum full color grading
♦ Latency and wall frame rate monitoring (compliment of DLSS)
♦ 3D calibrator positioning
♦ Frustum borders and overscan
3. DYNAMIC DMX LIGHTING via LIVE FX
♦ All fixtures (Aputure, Godox, Gemini) DMX-controlled & pixels mapped via Live FX and LFX iPad mixer
♦ Lights sample the wall content real time e,g simulating rotor shadows
Light positioned by LiveFX on rotating blade mapped onto Gemini fixture, simulating rotor shadows onto rig & actors.
Pixels mapping onto full spectrum fixtures: Titan (RGBMA) tubes dynamically reflect street neon content.
4. CAMERA TRACKING and DOF COMPENSATION
Mo-Sys Star Tracker integrated from Venice 2 to Sony FX9
♦ Applied DOF Compensation to enhance depth and cinematic realism
Gen-lock used on wall, UE and cameras — no perceptible lag time.
5. OpenCIO and COLOR CALIBRATION
Deployed OCIO protocol across LED wall, vid processor, UE & LiveFX
♦ Calibration color wall methodology for any camera proper exposure
♦ Wall content graded via RCP iPad
Personally calibrated every on-set monitors — good, bad, and almost ugly.
6. LED TILE ENGINEERING
♦ Solved persistent LED tearing issues caused by slow 1/28 tiles scan rate and low camera refresh shutter rate (Arri mini LF, Sony Fx9)
♦ Resort to video processor deep level adjustments & camera operational methodology – simply a miracle!
7. NEW DESIGN: 2025 56′ LED WALL
LED tiles issues prompted my new design for an L-shaped LED wall 56’x14′ built with tiles:
♦ 1.9mm pitch
♦ Ultra-fast 1/8 scan IO rate
♦ Largest LED wall in New England – activated March 2025
Used Unreal Engine for Techvis to test different LED wall curvature geometries.

1. AETNA HEALTH — Late 2024
[All UE5 backgrounds + MOS]
Shot on Sony Venice — this commercial features 3 different UE environments including a complex park scene with digital extra in the back.
AETNA HEATLH —BTS
Next 3 photos: complex virtual / practical space blends in the apartment and the park bench scenes.
Brain bar views: another nDisplay multi-user session.
Great alignment of CG world to the physical camera.
2. HOME GYM SUPPORT — 2023
[All UE5 backgrounds & Final pixels]
Demonstrates seamless integration of practical set and digital environments, The featured floor is challenging for blending
HOME GYM SUPPORT — BTS
Next 3 photos: showcasing handheld camera with inner / outer frustums and blending floor complexities
Blending magic: Lighting design and in-camera motion mask transition line between real and virtual
♦ 1st image: work-in-progress reveals a transition line
♦ 2nd image, final output: line has become imperceptible
Figure out which exercise bike is real !
3. QUICKSERVE — 2023
[All UE5 backgrounds & Final pixels]
Early VP project featuring 6 UE environments with transitions. Established wall calibration and camera exposure workflow.
Higher contrast in background plates resulted from an uncorrect calibration workflow, fixed in following projects.
VP TECHNOLOGY – Proof of Concept Projects⇧
1. BROOKLYN BRIDGE CAFE (MOS)
VP Supervision | Concept | UE5/LiveFX Ops
[LFX Cityscape + UE5 Zepp – Final pixels]
Project Goal
Real-time VP shoot: LiveFX combines real 4K film bgd plates & CG Zeppelin in UE5 with full cam Mo-Sys tracking
BROOKLYN BRIDGE CAFE — BTS
Mo-Sys camera tracking applies to both cityscape plate and CG zepp in 3D space with different depth compensation, hence less parallax motion on the furthest buildings than the zeppelin closer to camera.
Metallic surfaces & glass reflections align with CG world.
At the Brain bar: LiveFX control & composite of the 2D background with CG zeppelin and practical set (iPhone picture has blown highlights on wall).
Mo-Sys installed on Sony FX9 camera running on dolly — live composite on the wall.
At the Volume control, triggering LiveFX bridge sequence and CG Zeppelin action.
2. TRIPLE CHASE in SHANGHAI
VP Supervision| Concept | LFX/UE5 Ops | DMX Lights & Titan Control
[LiveFX Edit | Pitchvis | VP Techvis]
Project Goal
Real-time VP shoot combining:
♦ Actor riding Harley on stage
♦ 4K BMW Shanghai plates via LiveFX
♦ DMX lighting synced to wall content
♦ CG drone animation via UE5
♦ all elements tracked with Mo-Sys
Creative Concept
A 1.5-minute action sequence: A Harley rider flees from a BMW and a laser-armed drone through neon-lit Shanghai streets.
(Pitchvis edit on request).
Tech Innovations
All stages (edit, plate stabilization, Pitchvis, Techvis, grading, final output) executed on the volume using only LiveFX and UE5.
Combine live-action actor, filmed plates and 3D assets in real-time with all components integrated together visually through the use of dynamic DMX full-spectrum lighting.
Full Spectrum Tubes Light Sampling
Full-spectrum Titan tubes respond dynamically to sampled lighting from plates and integrate actors with environment (Lightvis below).
